As Mississippi Debates Extreme 'Personhood' Amendment, Advocates Ask Where Are The Dems?:

A wonderful article on Huffington Post about what’s going on here in Mississippi.

…Hemmins and the No on 26 campaign said they are frustrated with the majority of Democratic politicians in Mississippi for refusing to publicly oppose the amendment.

“There’s been a lot of ‘off the record’ sentiment, but it’s really disappointing to not see state leadership publicly talk about the shortcomings and dangers of this initiative for the women and families of Mississippi,” said Leola Reis, a spokesperson for the No on 26 campaign.

The personhood measure actually has a fair amount of support from Mississippi Democrats. Jim Hood, the Democratic Attorney General, endorsed the amendment in a statement and said he would defend it if it were challenged. A spokesperson for Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree, the Democratic candidate for governor, told HuffPost that that he supports the amendment as well, despite his “concerns about some of the ramifications.”

But of all the Democrats in the State Senate, only two were willing to discuss the ballot measure at all, when called by HuffPost…

The Jackson Free Press reports:

The campaign working in support of the Personhood Amendment has launched a fake website to attack the Political Action Committee working against the ballot measure that would redefine the word person in the state Constitution. “Yes on 26” is using the site to call out Mississippians for Healthy Families’ registered officers Nsombi Lambright of the ACLU and Kay Scott of Planned Parenthood. The site attacks the organizations for their position on abortion rights.

ARS doubts in his post that Bachmann is even a licensed therapist.But Politico indeed confirms that he is not licensed and that Minnesota is one of the few states where you can practice therapy without a license:
The Minnesota Board of Psychology and the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy confirmed to POLITICO that Bachmann is not licensed with them. And a search of the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy license database returns no result.

Tenn. law bans posting images that "cause emotional distress":

this is a bit concerning because the language “cause emotional distress” is vague, as well as “post on the internet”.

A new Tennessee law makes it a crime to “transmit or display an image” online that is likely to “frighten, intimidate or cause emotional distress” to someone who sees it. Violations can get you almost a year in jail time or up to $2500 in fines…
The new legislation adds images to the list of communications that can trigger criminal liability. But for image postings, the “emotionally distressed” individual need not be the intended recipient. Anyone who sees the image is a potential victim. If a court decides you “should have known” that an image you posted would be upsetting to someone who sees it, you could face months in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

If you think that sounds unconstitutional, you’re not alone…

“Personhood” is on trial today, as the JFP is reporting:

Jackson Attorneys Robert McDuff and J. Cliff Johnson will stand before the full Mississippi Supreme Court today at 1:30 p.m. and explain why a ballot initiative giving rights to microscopic human eggs amounts to an illegal modification of the state constitution.

The plaintiff attorneys, who are working on behalf of two Lafayette County residents, oppose a 2-year-old effort by Personhood Mississippi to collect more than 130,000 signatures affirming a personhood-rights ballot issue. The organization successfully submitted the signatures to the secretary of state’s office in February 2010, and the issue is scheduled for the November ballot…

the I Heart Chaos blog goes on to say: “study after study shows that most women wouldn’t trust a one-night-stand or boyfriend if they said they had a shot or pill or whatever.”

I’m not familiar with any of the studies and IHC doesn’t reference them, but I’m curious - what are ya’lls thoughts on that? Do you think that women wouldn’t trust a boyfriend if they said they had a shot? Would you?

We all know, of course, that even within a committed relationship condoms are the only effective way to prevent STIs and certainly in a one night stand situation you would want to use condoms. What are ya’lls thoughts on this?

This is really mind-blowing. Speak English or you won’t be served at this restaurant in Lexington, NC. Glad that the restaurants in Europe didn’t have that rule because I don’t speak Czech or German and still needed to eat… I wonder if they plan to refuse service to all tourists from other countries and/or immigrants, or just anyone that they don’t like the looks of?

Jezebel is reporting on a piece on Gothamist that describes the protest of “the acquittal of the former NYPD officers who were accused of raping a woman inside her East Village apartment in 2008.”

According to Gothamist:

…the protest itself was largely good-natured, if loud, and missing was a palpable sense of anger. Attendees proclaimed to be outraged, but it seemed a proper sort of outrage, a politely civic disapproval out of balance with the gravity of the events that precipitated it.

It’s not at all funny that all it takes is a simple description to invalidate this protest. for people to care enough to come out to something and protest, that takes not only an understanding that a situation is unacceptable but a desire to make some sort of statement about it. for every ONE person that shows up to a protest there are likely ten that feel that it’s worth protesting but are too apathetic, too busy, or for whatever reason don’t or can’t show up.

Gothamist completely dismisses the protest with a few short sentences, yet hilariously reports that there was a “small but loud brass band” there. how small and sedate is a protest with a fucking brass band there? the attitude of this piece is disgusting to me. kudos to all the people that turned out to protest, i imagine they are, actually, outraged.
